HOME COOKS ARE NOT SUBJECT TO A PARTICULAR STYLE OR TRADITION
Instead, they let their menus reflect the peculiar micro culture around them. A good catch, a bumper crop, a lucky find. But also: a birthday, a graduation, a shitty day at work. Home cooks have an easy answer to the visitor’s oft-asked question: “What is it like to live here?”
HERE. TASTE. TODAY, IT’S LIKE THIS.
The very best way to get to know Kate is to join her in the kitchen.
Your kitchen, her kitchen, any kitchen. Whether it’s on her home turf, or as far away as Istanbul, Florence, or Yorkshire, Kate believes that kitchen work is a universal language understood by anyone who has ever prepared a meal. Cooking, at it’s best, is a joyful manifestation of love; and at it’s worst, still sustaining if even for a small while.
A native of California, and a 23-year resident of Maine, Kate has worked in kitchens for most of her life. From the culturally diverse restaurant labor force of the San Francisco Bay Area, to the seafood rich inns and bed & breakfasts of Northern New England.
Kate is the author of three acclaimed cookbooks, and is an intermittent contributor to regional magazines, newspapers, and periodicals on subjects ranging from food to travel.
She is the owner of Ragged Coast Chocolates with her husband Steve, and has earned national recognition as an award winning chocolate maker.
Having once been described by a fellow writer as “unabashedly from away,” Kate makes her home in Portland, Maine. She feels that her square peg/round hole existence is her greatest asset as a writer and creator, gifting her an evergreen sense of wonder and celebration for the world around her.
